Overview: This two-hour clinic builds on basic casting skills and focuses on refining techniques you'll use on the water. Session 3 will refine casting technique, learn systematic approaches to locating fish in river environments, review water safety and stewardship, and gain practical hatch and bug identification strategies to match and present flies with confidence.

What you’ll learn

  • Line management fundamentals: roll casts, mend techniques.

  • Accuracy and distance: drills to improve target casting

  • Presentation refinement: controlled false casts

  • Troubleshooting common faults: addressing tailing loops, overcasting, timing errors, and inefficient wrist/elbow use.

    Locating Fish on Rivers

  • Reading water: identifying seams, riffles, pools, tailouts, eddies, and lies where fish hold.

  • Current dynamics: understanding water speed, structure, and the feeding lanes trout and other species use.

  • Approach and presentation strategy: how to move, cast, and position to minimize disturbance and maximize hookup rates.

  • Using flies: indicator strategies, nymphing tracks, and dry/dropper placements.

    Water Safety and Fly-Fishing Ethics

  • Personal safety: wading techniques, footwear selection, use of wading staffs, recognizing hazards ( holes, fast currents).

  • Buddy system, wading safety, and emergency procedures

  • Conservation-oriented practices: leave-no-trace basics, proper release techniques, handling fish with care, and respecting spawning areas.

  • Etiquette on crowded rivers: spacing, honoring anglers already fishing a run, and communication.

  • Legal considerations: adherence to local regulations, bag limits, and closed seasons.
